Global Islands Network
- a non-profit organization established to conduct and promote culturally appropriate, ecologically sound, economically sustainable and socially equitable development on islands worldwide.
Now includes the database
- formerly maintained by the International
Centre for Island Studies - a comprehensive listing of island-related websites around the world,
categorized by island, theme, and region, with links to a wealth of island data.
Climate Institute, Climate Change and Small Island States
- a bibliography of work, much available online, on the threat to islands
from rising sea levels caused by global warming.
EURISLES
(European Islands Network of Links and Exchanges) - a technical network
gathering statistical data and documentation on the European islands, and
undertaking research on issues of Island interest; an initiative of the
"Islands Commission" of the Conference
of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe; see especially the excellent Off
the Coast of Europe, Eurisles' study of insularity
in the context of the European Union.
Global
Issues: Overseas Territories—Thirteen of the 15 territories covered
on this website from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British
Government are islands or island groups. The website includes short
summaries of the history and government of each of the territories.
Global Web Service on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands
- created at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2002,
with the aim of advancing the sustainable development of oceans, coasts, and islands.
Institute of Island
Studies - This Institute is a research, education, and public policy institute based at the University of Prince Edward
Island in Canada. While its work emphasizes Prince Edward Island, it focuses on the culture, environment, and economy of small
islands generally as well. Note especially its library
of online materials.
Islands
and Small States Institute - promoting research and training on
economic, social, cultural, ecological, and geographical aspects of islands
and small states; based at the Foundation for International Studies at the
University of Malta; note its collection of links to sites of interest to islands and small states.
Island Information
- Joshua Calder's categorization of islands, not only by such basic measures
as area and population, but by a wide variety of other criteria, for
example, "tallest islands of the world" and "largest lake
islands of the world."
Island
Resources Foundation - a nonprofit focusing on the environmental
problems of development in small tropical islands; works mostly, but not
exclusively, with islands of the Caribbean; specialties include biodiversity
conservation planning, coastal zone and watershed management, institutional
capacity building, and environmental information on the Internet.
International
Small Islands Studies Association - ISISA encourages scholarly
study and discussion of small- island issues such as "islandness", smallness, insularity, dependency, resource management and environment, and the nature of island
life. It promotes the networking of small island communities through international communication systems, such as newsletters and journals and the holding of periodic, multi-disciplinary
conferences.
Office of the High
Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing
Countries and Small Island Developing States - small island
developing states are one of the three focuses for this arm of the United
Nations, created in December 2001; the Office focuses on advocacy,
coordination, and the mobilization of support for poverty eradication,
peace, and development for its three constituencies.
